Blindly Buying Recoil Parts - a little help?

Post by Go Go Diablo » Sat Jan 29, 2011 9:55 pm

Hey Guys,

I was at a swap meet today and saw what I thought were the catch dogs and catch hubs for the 252 JLO recoil. So I bought them. When I got them home, I noticed some differences from an original recoil. Help me understand if these differences matter.

The catch dogs I bought have the arm on them. From Barrie's explanation on the website, these look to be the same dogs in his picture, yet the dogs in my recoil did not have the arm on them. What is the difference between the two?

The above picture shows the dogs with the arm in place on the recoil. Below it is the dog without the arm that was in the recoil. Note how the catch is worn off. Is this the part you guys talk about welding up to make new again?

Below is the catch hub. The original has the areas cut out between the catches and the one I found does not. Again, any difference in them?

Hi Bruce, Looks like at some point somebody put the wrong parts in your recoil, thats why they wore out. The new ones that look like a bird are the right ones for that older style recoil. The wore out ones are for the newer style recoil with the bigger diameter rope drum. That catch hub may work as long as haw far it sticks out is the same.

Thanks devil dog. That makes sence.

Any observations about the differences in the hub? Any reason why they both won't work of if one is better than the other?

Just make sure the I.D. of the hub hole on the new one fits the rope drum raised round portion in center. I think the original one with open slots has a bigger I.D. The original one looks good, I think I would just run that one.

Bruce, that used one that you got looks like new compared to the one that I'm using and I've never had a problem with mine. I did start with new pawls though. As of Sunday, I've logged on 204 miles this season according to my gps, 366 miles last winter and 232 miles the winter before. I think that one of yours will last forever. Frank

That is a new pawl. I found a box full at a swap meet and was not sure if they were right. So I only grabbed two.

Maybe I should have grabbed more :(

The other thing I noticed tonight after devil dog's comment about the hub is that the ID is too small for the original JLO recoil, but fits just right in one of those Rockwell JLO recoils. Thanks for the heads up. :D

I've located some more of these recoil pawls and have a limited supply if anyone wants any. They are $8 each.

While at the St Germain swap meet, I picked up what I thought were some JLO Recoil Pawls. I thought these were the one's devil dog referred to:

When I got them home, I realized they do not have the small hole in for the spring. Anyone know for sure what these are for?
I have about a dozen of them if someone needs some.

Them are for the newest style JLO single cylinder rewind. I don't think that they can be set up for the reverse rotation Hus-ski engines.

Ken M sent me an email and said:

"The ones with the tail on them were the latest style pawl. They were a correction to the
problems the original design had (with out the tail). The fix was in response to engine
vibration and vibration of the starter handle faultsly engaging the pawls and wearing out
the hook end of them and the center hub. The new ones with the tail will work in the old starters,
will work with either rotation (left or right). They are a much better pawl. The center
hub difference, I am not sure about that change, but both will work. The only thing to
pay attention to there is the standout distance from the flywheel".

I bought a number of these for $5/pair. If anyone wants any, I'll sell them for that same price.

Thanks everyone for your help with what they were for and their history.
