 .... My guess is this "rare" 500 clutch is from the mid/last of the 500 models. The secondary clutch from my 500 I posted a picture of, and what Bruce has said to be "common" to most 500's is of an older salsbury design. The "rare" clutch has the "moveable face assembly" with the 3 "link" attachment points, indicating it is a next generation clutch. (salsbury made a variation of this secondary design that used 3 "links" that coupled the "moveable face assembly" with the "outer spring cup" and did not use the spring clip or the bolts/nuts. The 3 cast pieces that are on the "moveable face assembly" of the "rare" and 502/503 clutch's were the lower attachment points for the "links".) I think that salsbury made a "mid - season" upgrade on thier secondary clutch design and the mid/last of the 500's off the line used these. They might not of realized there might have been clearance issues until later, and why the 502 and 503 sleds went back to the spring clip design for the "outer spring cup" was for clearance issues. Some 500 owners might have recieved newer style clutch's under warranty? Those owners that never drove much or ever looked under the hood, never knew any different.

We know (maybe) that there are three versions of the secondary clutch. We know this because of documentation....but what is that clutch on Mark's 500? Like the sceptics who first saw my clutch, I am sceptical about this one mainly because of the inner cup being smaller than the spring. Does the clutch say Salsbury on it anywhere?

On the back side of the fixed face/sheave where the bolts/rivots attach (hub). The "cast" looking hub has stampings on it that should say Salbury.
I disassembled all of my chain cases today and am sure my 503 secondaries had this identification. I will check the 500 clutch in the morning.
Bruce has said that the clutch I posted from my 500 is what he has seen most.

Hi all

Here are some pictures of my secondary clutch on my 500. It says that it's a Salbury series 900 made in USA and Torque Converter. Hope it helps

Hey Mark, Let me start off by saying NICE WORKSHOP! I dont claim to be an expert either but it looks like that 500 clutch has been "played with" at some point in its life. The spring does not fit in the sheive cup and the outer spring cup looks like it has been welded around the whole edge. Sorry, dont mean to pick a guys clutch apart! I cant even figure out how to post a picture with my reply!

Here is a picture of the 500 clutch disassembled. This is how I got it and yes, it has had a hard life and looks to have been "frankensteined" to a certain extent. The outer spring cover looks to be original but was too thin and needed a washer welded on for strength. The lower spring cup you guys are questioning is really just a groove machined into the hub that the spring sits in. It's all good, if all a machine needs is new paint and decals then it really does not interest me. For me the fun is in the rebuild and learning about the sleds. Thanks for the comment on my shop. It's been 20+ years of working outdoors and dreaming to finally have a heated garage to work in. :D I post pictures through photobucket. Register, upload the photo from your computer to your photobucket album, copy the IMG code under your picture, then paste it in with your post here.

That clutch sure looks primative. It creats a whole new problem...how to find one!!!

I examined all my clutches today and found a total of three different clutches:
1- the clutch on my 500
2-a secondary described in the salsbury manual as a model 700. I am assuming they are model 700's because there is no indication of this on the torque converter
3-a secondary with "model 900" in raised lettering on the outside of the hub.

This tank was so dirty inside that I cut it open only to find 1/4" of hard rust and sludge on the bottom and rust etc on the sides. It scraped off with a putty knife to reveal clean, unpitted sides. I first tried to loosen the debris with a chain within the tank, then stones and bolts but it was too hard. Believe it or not, this tank came with gas in it and was not leaking.

The key that there was a serious rust problem inside this tank was how heavy it was compared to tanks which were clean. There appears to be no leaks except for the one I created.
