Hello, that is a 1963 model 400. Very nice! If you look at parts section of this site, you will see a 444 muffler that will work and fenders too. You could probobly get away with just replacing the front part as it is a separate piece.

Today the photos came up fine. It was just a computer glitch yesterday. For sure that is a fine example of an early model 400 just as Devil Dog said. The steel adjusting knob as well as a low serial number make it an early 400. I estimate only 500 model 400's were made. Has it been repainted at any time?

Yes it has been repainted. When I got it from my grandfather it was brush painted light blue I repainted it yellow and drove it for a few years but it has been sitting for the last twenty years. I have no brake parts on it except the brake drum is it possible to find some? I am fixing it now what do you think about just changing front of fender?

Changing the front of the fender is easy since the lift handle covers the joint. If the brake drum is welded to the fixed sheave of the secondary, then it will be easy to find a brake band assembly. If your 400 is equipped with a separate brake drum it is also easy since the brake band assemblies were on many models. Can you tell which brake drum you have?

It looks like the brake drum is welded, but I have to get the bearing pulled off to be sure. Also, I am in need of the front part of the fender and new belts for the track.

Can anyone verify if a 444 muffler will fit a 400?

Hi Cooter, Yes, the muffler will work, as it is the same motor and mount and exit location on body. The original muffler is basically a 200-A style cone type with a flange to fit the 252 JLO. Looks like the original fender pan straightened out nice. The guy that makes the full pans can make the shorty front fender piece too.In the pics the tracks looked great, no? Oh, looks like you have a chain sprocket with more than 9 teeth. That was an upgrade I believe for more speed. Sweet ! You need to take the big nut off the clutch first,impact wrench, then the clutch, drum, and bearing . if you put in a press with bearing on press plates, all pieces will come off the jackshaft.
