Has anyone used regulare hex head bolts and lock nuts
to replace the stove bolt type with square nuts?

That's what I have on my 444 and the traction is great. Regular bolt and nut with washers and a lock washer. Once on tight the bolt is cut flush with nut.
Replaced my cleats last year and did the same again.

I've built severeal sets of tracks and used 1/4" hex head bolts and nuts. The only part of a Hus-ski restoration that I hate is taking apart tracks that were put together with stove bolts. I've taken several tracks apart to salvage the C channel style cleats and just about every cleat on everyone of them had stove bolts.

use locknuts over lock washer and nuts

On the several tracks we have rebuilt we use nylock nuts. Way less chance of them working there way loose.

I forgot to mention it. I always use self locking nuts. I use the all metal style lock nuts because they hold better than the nylon style.I'm sure the nylon style are fine though, that is what most people seem to be using.
