gas tank location

I'M confused where the tank is on a 600 single track. The manual shows it mounted down in the tub but mine is mounted on the firewall. Is it possible that someone put it there because of carb issues? Also, the hood has the v notches cut out but this is a single track. Has it been changed or did the later serial number single tracks use this hood before the recall. I can't get my pictures on because of file size .

The gas tank for the double track was on the outside of the firewall. The notches indicate a double track hood. There was no need for the notches on a singletrack base. How these parts got onto a single track base is anyone's guess.

Thanks for the info, Barrie. This project has been challenging so far. Now if I can only get the new muffler to line up with the cut out in the firewall.

I had to cut the dischatge pipe below the muffler and turn it just a little to get mine to line up and then rewelded it.

I cut the pipe this morning and turned it about 1/8 inch at the muffler and now it fits. I also had to lengthen it a little.
