Barrie this one is for you,
Well, I took apart the recoil following carefully your instructions and wow it went very well. My problem was that there seemed to be restriction or rubbing inside preventing a smooth return of the cable. Even worst when in very cold temperature. Cleaned it out completely and proceeded to reassembled everything as per instructions. Again went very well and everything very smooth.... until the plate is screwed on. Once the plate is on, even more restrictions to the point were the cable doesn't return inside until the plate is loosened. No problem, I must have forgotten something. Tear it apart again, this time with the spring flying all over the place, but with those great instructions it was all back in place in no time. Everything checked and double checked before the recoil was put back together. The action is good and smooth again until that *()^%&^*&$# plate is put in place. Looking at the inside of the plate it is obvious that something is rubbing severely against it and has been for a while. Hence the original reason for taking it apart. Not a problem, determined to fix that , I took it all apart again and again and again with all kinds of results except what I wanted. I must have rewinded that spring 10 times *&^*()^%$*&. I am sure now that I am not forgetting something since the whole mechanism works fine until the plate is installed. One thing good about all this is that I can now take it apart and put it back together with my eyes closed, however I cannot figure out why the drum is rubbing on the inside of the plate. I've cheched and the drum is sitting properly on the spring with the small end in the slot. It appears that the posts that the claws rotate on are the ones rubbing on the inside of the plate. Any insight on what could be wrong?

For everything to work perfectly you have to stand on your left foot with your tongue held firmly between you right side molars. These are the last instructions I often forget to mention.

The posts for the dogs should be about 1/16" below the top plate. You can check this with a straight edge after the first plate is put in place. If the plate is not flat, then the springs push the cup apart until they separate, only to ride on each other when they go to a "narrower" place in the plates thus creating a wedged situation and a recoil which no longer operates. The cups must slide within each other.
Re: 444 recoil, recoil, recoil
I'm starting to think that maybe the parts (DRUM) might not be original but I doubt it. When I attached the top plate there is a springy motion, so obviously the cups are touching the 2 plates. When I can't find what is wrong, I like to leave it for a while and do something else. That's what I am doing now and will tackle it again when all else is done. I will start sober and if the problem continues, I will become drunk, which usually works better in finding a fix. I will keep you posted on the results, unless I did something stupid which I realise later.

There are two styles of cups available.Flat ones and ones with little "tits". You want the flat ones for the old style recoils. Mabe that is the problem?
