Ken followed up with these comments:
Just to expand slightly regarding the new
design. Have you ever seen the stops for the starter pawls busted out allowing
the pawl to open up too much? You can see in your pictures where the pawl
returns and comes to rest against that stop on the cable pulley. Your stops are
not broken, but there is some wear where the pawl makes contact. The addition
of the tail on the pawl help to balance the pawl and prevent it from being kicked back
after a faults engagement which would eventually bust out the pawl stop on the cable
pulley. It again was a fix for a problem related to engine vibration and a flopping
starter T - handle.
