Proving that even I don't know everything about Diablos (still learning ya all ), I've got two questions I'd like to get some feedback on.
First off is a question about the motors. I always thought the 503's came with a 191R but after having a number of them in the shop this winter, they all had the 190R in them. The 190R and the 191R are almost identical, with the major difference being the 191R has a larger tapered shaft on the PTO side. The question I have for everyone is if you have a 503, what engine is in it?
The second question regards the serial numbers. We know the model 500 started with 10,000 and number up with production. After that, I've always thought the 502 and 503 started with 20,000 and numbered up with production with no rhyme or reason to which number is a 502 or a 503. However, after talking with a few of you and again looking at a number of 503's in the shop, it seems maybe the 503's started with 30,000 and numbered up which means the 502's were only numbered in the 20,000 range.
So the second question is, does anybody have a 503 that is numbered in the 20,000 range and does anybody have a 502 that is numbered in the 30,000 range?
Thanks all for helping solve the many mysteries of which Bolens has given us.

Re: 503 Engines and Serial Numbers
Both of my 503's have a 190R engine. I also thought they were 191's.
As far as serial numbers go, 500-10000, 502-20000, 503-30000 is how I figure it.......although..........as the serial numbers for the HUS-SKI's are well determined as far as model goes, there is always the odd machine which does not fit into the sequence.

Re: 503 Engines and Serial Numbers
Bruce, I didn't have time to check on the engine model # but my serial number on the 503 is 30820.

Rock,
If we determine like Barrie says that the 503's started with 30,000, then for sure your's would be a 1968.

Re: 503 Engines and Serial Numbers
'68 or '69 since they were made for two years. A low 30000 would be '68 and high 30000 would be '69 but we have no idea at which number one year ended and the next year started. Since design changes for the Diablos are pretty well documented, your machine could be dated according to what was or wasn't changed but this is a difficult process. Serial number collecting is an easy way to determine how many were made and a good estimation of which year in the case of a model which spans several years.
Re: 503 Engines and Serial Numbers
On my ownership they put 1968 . Since my Diablo is 30041 does that mean that it was the 41 done in 68 ? Next week i'm going to the MTO to transfer the 503 under my name
