Hi all,

I'm always amazed when I see someone has polished up aluminum or other pieces on their vintage sleds. I've tried to mimic such quality, but miserably fail by comparison.

Would some of you more accomplished restorers out there share some of your techniques for making steel and aluminum pieces shine? Some pictures would be great too.

well it depends on how dirty it is to start and is it still assembled or not ,,, if not take it to a big truck wash have them acid spray it then home it goes and if its still hazy i took 3M pads cut them in circles sewed them to gether and mounted them on a 12 inch long spindle on a 3/4 hp motor , more room for larger parts,, buff till the corrossion is off ,,, now for the shine i use jewelers rouge and a cloth wheel the larger dia wheels i find are better and should be fairly stiff rubb the rouge on the wheel and start polishin the piece ,, rouge comes in several grades start with the coarse and work up clean the wheel as it does get dirty i use a old knife press it against the wheel and old dirty rouge is removed and add more and polish more its best to have a wheel for fine med and coarse ,,,with practice you can make almost anything shine like a mirror i will send bruce a few pics and he can post them<<< cause i dont know how lol
and be careful some times the wheel likes to grab and it can be ugly when your piece hits the floor
