Looking for a 54R3 Can trade a 191 Hirth

Post by bogie » Wed Jul 01, 2009 12:12 pm

I am looking for a 54R3 Hirth 300. I can offer a 191R Hirth 300 in trade. The 191 rolls nicely and has 120# compression. It is complete with carb and good recoil but no exhaust.

Or I have a question....Can I take a 191R and rotate it to be a "lay down" motor. Does it use the same mounting bracket as a 54R3?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Bogie

In my search for motors for my Diablo's, it has been easier to locate the Hirth 54 and 191's "sister motors" for use. I have managed to find two basket case 56R (292cc) motors and two fairly complete 193R (292cc) motors and a 192R (317cc) motor. You can "flip" the cylinders and pistons 180 degrees on these motors to achieve the correct intake/exhaust configuration when you mount them in the Diablo. These "sister motors" are much easier to locate than the original 54 and 191 motors as they were used in a lot of sleds in the late 60's early 70's. To my knowledge the electrical is similar from model to model with only slight variations (one of my 193 motors is an R3 and the other an R4 with the difference being the R3 has the ignition coil mounted to the stater plate and the R4 has it external). The motors all look "identical" (54-55-56 and the 191-192-193) and without looking at the motor name plate I don't think you could ever tell the difference. If your not too worried about having an "original" motor this gives you many more options to keep/get that Diablo back on the snow. For a 56R motor I plan on fabricating my own plate to "rotate" the rewind and for the 193R motor I have option of using the rewind or looking for the electric start parts (starter and ringed flywheel). I have heard that the cranks do however have a different taper to accept the Diablo clutch as opposed to the more regular salsbury clutch's found on most other sleds.

Hope this helps. ....Mark.
