next I turned my attention to the recoil starter. Giving it a thorough cleaning and inspection and as I mentioned in a earlier posting the case was damaged by the cable cutting into it. So after having it repaired and buying new replacement parts I could begin the restoration of the starter.

this is the aluminum weld repair. After the welding I had to clean up the hole and rethread it so I could install a new cable guide.

This is all the new parts (which includes a new recoil spring, new rope guides for starter and dash, new cable, new handle, new brake spring and caps and new return springs) laid out and the old spring removed and ready for reassembly

with the old recoil spring removed and using lots of fluid film (Wirth film) I started by installing the new recoil spring on to the cable drum using the retaining bends to keep the spring in place then fitting the drum and the spring into the starter case. After making sure the end is securely attached to the pin on the case, I carefully removed the retaining bends.

With the spring secured to the drum and the drum installed in the case, now I can remove the retaining bends and relax the spring.

with the starter completely rebuilt this has completed repairs on all the damage incurred by the cable cutting through the various parts. In this last photo, it shows the excess cable that will need to be trimmed to size after routing through the dash and through the starter handle.

Is WIRTH FILM the same as FLUID FILM?

In MY OPINION, yes they are the same - colour, smell, texture and quality. And both have almost the same description on the label. I also use this on the throttle linkage (from the hand lever to the shafts on the carburetor) and I also "power lube" the choke cable with fluid film and I coat the ball joint with this too.
Since I am talking about lubricating products, a couple of other WURTH products I like to use are:

1. Rost Off Gold - which is what I use instead of WD-40. I THINK it works better for removing rusted nuts, bolts etc.

2. WURTH HHS Red Lube. This is what I use to lube the drive chain. I apply it throughout the operating season and I coat it for summer storage.
