Travel in deep snow is affected greatly by the tracks ability to move snow. New machines today have tracks with paddles up to 3" high. The husski with a "u" channel cleat had a total paddle depth of 1" but it could be counted as 1-1/4" if we count the second edge of the "u" channel cleat.

Hey Barrie I just want to clarify as to why I used 53 inches for calculating load carrying on ski. Bear in mind I am not an engineer! I think Igor is looking for ground pressure or mass carrying load of one ski. The 53 inches is the flat area of the ski which is 100% load supporting on the snow (regardless of powder or hard packed snow) whereas the tip as you suggest, is a radius and from the bottom of the radius to the tip or top of the ski, it is a diminishing % of load carrying capability. So I am sure there is a formula for calculating this % and adding to the 100% of the load area of the flat part of the ski but I don't know how to calculate that. So for making it simple for Igor to calculate ground pressure, I used 53 inches as it is 100% load supporting. 6 inches width x 53 inches length gives you 100% supporting area and divide this by total load or mass will give you ground pressure. Then after you have that figured out you could add in your radius % too to give you total from tip to tale. As I said, I am not an engineer so the 53 inches was to simplify calculating ground pressure!
My thoughts....

Peter and Barrie,

You both are offering such great technical information. This should be valuable to Igor and his team.

Does anyone know if there is a You Tube video of a Hus Ski driving through deep snow?
Too many Diablos and parts to count.

Hi Guys
Lots of video on my you tube channel at.... tesker53 The best ones of some deep snow running by Hus-skis are the Chalk River videos. In particular, 2012 to 2014. Bear in mind that a lot of these riders have been riding Hus-skis for decades.
The Val Des Bois runs and video clips have some good examples of both Hus-skis and Diablos. The 2019 video shows Hus-skis breaking trail in deep snow. Here are some links. Enjoy.

Your video from the 25th Chalk River Run in 2015 also has some good examples of both Diablos and Hus-skis running in deep snow.

See you at the 30th! on February 1st.

I went to my archives and found an old VHS video with some good deep snow running with hus-skis and even one lone diablo. I had to record it to a DVD, put it on my PC and convert it to a file extension the PC would play and trim the result to show just the deep snow running portion. No small feat with my limited computer knowledge. This was the Chalk River Run in 2009. It shows the Hus-ski in the snow conditions for which it was built. Enjoy.

Hello everybody.
Thank you for your help. Your answers gave a lot of useful information such as pressure on snow, design and basic dimensions.
Thanks to Roy Teske for providing the video. We watched them with great pleasure.
Now we have an idea of the movement of your equipment in deep snow.
We paid attention to how to control a snowmobile in deep snow.
You have a very good and friendly team, which you are going for joint visits.
We also have an annual gathering place with friends in the Ural mountains, where we all ride on homemade snowmobiles.
We wish you a wonderful trip.

I also watched your video. It also doesn't show me too much that I would comment on regarding the machine. The video shows the machine travelling too quickly or it is too far away and there are too many trees blocking a clear view for me to see details. If you could take another video of the machine showing its operation up close so we can see more details, it would be very helpful. And some still pictures of the components you are asking about would also be helpful. (but I can understand your reluctance to do this as you are working on a prototype)
We will definitely show photos and videos of our snowmobile.

Barrie, you make some good points about the attaching point of the sleigh to the tractor . I also think the attaching point or Ball joint location on the tractor is critical to the steering geometry. Too far back will push the sleigh further back making it harder for the driver to reach the handle bars, brake and throttle controls especially in tight cornering. This means you would have to modify the sleigh frame to bring the operator forward, to make the operator more comfortable when using the controls. Moving the ball joint further forward on the tractor will move the sleigh closer to the tractor which brings the operator closer to the handlebars . This will also position the skis closer to the tractor possibly creating an interference when turning. So, by repositioning the ball joint further forward or backward, I would think the sleigh frame and/ or handlebars would also need to be re-engineered so the driver could maintain good control, steer-ability and comfort. So in other words, the location of the ball joint has an effect on all three: driver comfort, handlebar geometry and length of the sleigh frame. If you re-engineered the handlebars making them longer, it will give you a bigger radius or much larger swing right to left. Making them shorter will do the opposite ie a shorter radius or much narrower swing right to left.
Right now, a Diablo ball joint is approximately 15” from the rear, a Hus-Ski 444 ball joint is approximately 18” and again I think Hus-ski/Bolens has probably tested this positioning of the ball joint to achieve optimum performance in steer-ability and optimum performance in powder snow (as Barrie has pointed out). I have added a couple of pictures of the side profile and an overhead view to help visualize what I am trying to explain here.
Something else to think about….

Winter is ending, the snow is melting.
I regret that I could not make and test skis for our little snowmobile this season. Very little free time for creativity. But do not be sad, we will prepare for the next season.
