To Prime or not to Prime Chat 3/2/14

Hi all,

Wow it's been a cold winter. It was well below zero again this morning and will be again tomorrow. Here in Green Bay, they never have had more than 47 days during a winter when at some point in the day - it has been below zero F. I think today is number 51. To add to that, we have snow, snow and more snow. If it's not below zero, it is snowing it seems.

What a great time of year.

I've never been a fan of modifying carburetion. I typically always put Diablos back to original as much as I can and this means when it's time to start them, expect to pull them over a half dozen times before they fire off.

But Sam N up in Tomahawk, WI may have me changing my tune a bit. Sam has primers on his Diablos and a neat little nipple insert you put into the base of the HR carbs. I was so impressed with how well his Diablos started with a couple of primes, I had to give it a try on my 500.

It works pretty darn well.

Anyone else using primers on their Diablos and having good or bad luck with them?

Leaning that way myself Bruce, but I need to hide a primer where Barry can't see it.

Well, the verdict is in and I'm sold.

This 500 has always been a good starter. But with most Diablo manual start models, you still have 6 to 8 pulls to get them going.

Now with 3 pumps on the primer, this Diablo has started on one pull on the 4 occasions I have cold started it. In addition, if there is a vapor lock issue like happens to these motors on occasion, the primer gets fuel down the carb and the motor going enough to get past that issue. We put another 10 miles on the Red Devils yesterday which may be the last ride in this neck of the woods.

Bruce glad its working for you still going to get a bunch of screw in nippels instead of press in, Looking forward to summer workshop if your going to have one.

I have also been thinking of adding that primer. I have the exact one stock on my 1999 Polaris RMK, it sat for 3+ years and started this fall with one pull after a half dozen pumps. Had to get a replacement years ago from Shade Tree Powersports pricing was about $20 I think. How is it plumbed into the carb?

I drilled a hole in the flange of the carb. Then this brass nipple is pressed into the hole. Some of the nipples have threads on them which I think are better than the press in ones, but I've not found those yet.
