Diablo 500 Restoration 7/10/13

Post by Go Go Diablo » Wed Jul 10, 2013 9:04 pm

Hi all,

Spent the last few weeks putting the finishing touches on a fresh restoration. This is a 1967 Diablo 500. With a 500 restoration, there are a few things that should be completed:

- Make sure the front bumper and nose tin are reinforced. This supports the hood mount. Without the added support, the hood mount sags and the inside of the hood then hits on the post under the hood and puts a dent in the hood.

- Add reinforcement to the sides of the chassis to keep the frame rigid.

- Add some welds between the sheet metal and tubular frame.

- Add gussets to the handlebars if they don't have them.

- By the bogie stations, add anti-flip pins against the pivots. This will stop the bogie stations from flipping over when you go over bumps. Ask Barrie what happens to 500's when you don't make this modification.

- Replace the bogie station pivot pins with ones that use a cotter pin rather than the spring clips.

- The top motor mount should have the angle added to support the weight of the motor.

- Add a heat shield under the carb (not shown at this time as I need to get some made).

- Inside the ski seater, add a similar reinforcement like the 502/3 seaters have. Without the reinforcement, the seater tub could cave in when you are giving all the girls a ride on your fancy new Diablo!

Happy Trails ya-all!

Bruce - Wow this one is an absolutely gorgeous 500. Is this for your private collection or are you going to part with it?

Private Collection Peter?

It seems every year someone talks me out of my restorations. I suspect the fate of this Diablo will be no different, but I hope to get a few miles on it anyway.

Thanks for the comments ya all!
