Hus-ski or not

A place to ask all your questions about Hus Skis or just a great place to spread a little of that Yellow Pride.

I was the 4th 5th or 6th employee so because I can't remember let's settle on fifth. I was hired in Hespler as a draftsman, in a few days became an inspector and a test driver.
In Hespler the model 200 was built on a poor excuse for an assembly line. Bases were welded on a jig with four casters then they were rolled around the shop to the next station. Sub assemblies were made in other areas and everything came together in an area where we did the final inspection. One example was a lady who drilled the wooden cleats with a four head drill in a drill press. Pickup a cleat on her right, put it in the jig, drill the holes and drop it in the box on her left. I could have watched her all day but that's a story I will only tell in person. In Hespler we rented a complete manufacturing plant. It was owned by a Mr. Smith and made furnaces. It was a union shop and the costs killed us. We were in Hespler from about Sept. 1st till Christmas. Then everyone was laid off because the McQuat family from Lachute Quebec ran out of money. The Company was called Hus-ski Division of Pioneer Chain Saws Ltd.
Not to be confused with Pioneer Chain Saws Inc. in Peterborough, On. who made the saws. Pioneer chain Saws Ltd was a distributor in Quebec and the maritimes.
When we started in Pointe Claire we built a proper production line to make the 200-A. It was designed by Jim Anderson.
From day one in Hespler, James (Jim) Anderson, not Bob as I have seen him called, was my mentor and one of the fineist people a have ever known.

Ed,

I'm sure all agree with Sean's applause. Finding anyone with direct links to Hus Ski in Pointe Claire or Diablo in Port Washington has been difficult. And here you found us. I'd go as far as to say that documenting your rememberances of Hus Ski Manufacturing would be good for all mankind! :D

Now, how to do that would be another challenge. Something to think about I guess. Between Barrie and I, we may need to make a trip for a visit or arrange for a sit down at Alliston. In your head holds visions of most interest to many who have these fine machines.

Thank you so much for sharing,

Bruce

I think if Ed would continue to tell us all a few tales here or we open a section for him then we have documentation on his terms as and when he wants but if a visit is in store, then don't leave me out on that sit down!!

Sean Thanks Ed!!

Great stuff Ed. I look forward to more. You would be a sort of celebrity in Alliston, if you could make it. You would probably end up driving Hus-skis that you worked on and test drove 50 years ago. Were you still with Hus-ski when they started to build the Diablos? If you go the "original diablo web-site" , there's what looks like a diablo proto-type with slides. Do you know anything about this machine? Thanks for taking the time. Roy.

Thank you for all your kind comments. I dont know how to reply to each post in public but please, someone tell me if this is necessary, and how to do it. Sean I know Finch from many bike trips and my son-in-law is from Avonmore. I lived and ran my business in Hudson, Quebec.
I live in Sandhurst Shores, Ontario, which is on Lake Ontario, about 40 min. west of Kingston and about 25 min south of Napanee.
I will going to my son Craig's " super cottage" in the Muskoka's on Feb. 10th and he will be taking me to Alliston for the ride. I do hope that I will be able to ride a Hus-Ski
Watching the DVD I purchased from Bruce brought back so many memories and I started on a roll. I hired the Man, woman an little girl shown in the still shots.
We shot the scenes at a studio in Montreal. no a/c and it was over 85 F. The snow and trees in the background were projected on a screen. We had to keep running up and wiping the sweat off the models.

Thanks for your offer. I hope to be able to ride every model of every machine and get photos on every machine.
When I went to Barries about five years ago the only machine available was a prototype and Barrie took me for a ride. Great fun but I believe I was born to be a driver.
