Reversed recoil

Post by randys444 » Mon Feb 06, 2017 8:32 pm

When I bought my 444 it did'nt have a recoil on it, so I purchased one separately. I was cleaning and bolting everything to the motor mount when I noticed that the recoil is backwards,(I believe).
The motor was rebuilt, bench tested and runs beautifully. With the recoil like this, running in the wrong direction. My question is if I change the recoil over, will this motor run or will it need some adjusting.

Hi Randy:It will not run. It has to be retimed on the other key way and for the other rotation. I
I'll let the experts talk about that. You are also up against taking that recoil spring out and reversing it. Be careful. Barie put some information on the site about that. Good luck. Jim. ps. It was good meeting you in Port Washington.

I got my recoil changed around today, thanks to my brother for the extra help. It was quite a job , just like Barrie explained but we took our time and got it done. An extra set of hands makes a huge difference. We fixed that problem but discovered another, the recoil is missing a part. I am missing the intermediate plate(#208). If anyone knows where I could find one I would appreciate it. Thinking it might be a hard beast to find.

Is that the flat plate or the recessed one?

Good question, I'm just going by the # that's in the manual.

I have the flat cover plate if that's is what you meant. I don't have the plate that goes under the dogs.( the recessed one) The dogs don't work very well or at all.
Here is a picture of how it was set up when I took it apart. The inner spring cap is riding directly on the rope drum.

I am sure I have the inner plate. I can't imagine it working at all without it.

The dogs have been modified also. It looks like a good change. Now when they spring back, their force is distributed over a wider area of the ridge. Often the tip of the ridge is broken off.

That would be great if you had an extra one. Would be nice to get the recoil on so I can finish the handlebars. Thanks Randy.
