Hus Ski 400 Muffler

Post by Go Go Diablo » Sun Apr 05, 2015 8:35 pm

Hi all,

There are very few Hus Ski 400's out there. And with that, even fewer that have original mufflers on them. So I'm writing this post to gather some information on what muffler is best for this unit and all help and comments will be very much appreciated. This is what I can tell you.

For years, I was told the 400 took the same muffler as the 444. In fact, I sold several people this muffler and they made it work, but it was not perfect.

This past winter, Billy C from up in Ontario told me the 400 took a cone muffler like that used on the 200/200A. At first I thought that would make sense, but then I realized the exhaust flange on the JLO 152 used in the 200/200A is smaller than the flange on the JLO 252 used in the 400 & 444. Now I was scratching my head again.

Our friend Ken from Sheboygan, Wisconsin has a restored 400, so I went to him for answers. His comment was this:

I did replace that cone muffler with a hand built can muffler like the 444s have. The reason I did that was because the original muffler had almost no sound muffling and was extremely obnoxious to be around. Sounded like a rapid fire shot gun. But the original muffler was exactly the same design as the cone style 200/200a muffler.

So with that, I believe the original muffler on a 400 was a specially made cone style muffler with a large flange. But how did it fit in the 400?

Does anyone have more information or pictures of this original 400 muffler?

Thanks,

Bruce

Update 8/1/15

It seems there is very little information around for this Hus Ski 400 muffler. So what I have shared previously I still believe.

With the appreciated help from Ken, he showed me his custom made muffler in his restored 400.

I then took that muffler configuration and build the can style muffler with the larger exhaust flange and same baffling used on a 444 Muffler (252 JLO).

Thanks Ken!
