500 Gearbox Differences

Hi all,

Was working on a 500 gearbox tonight and found a peculiar difference I have never noticed before.

On what I presume are the early gearboxes on the 500's, there are only 8 cover bolts. On later 500 gearboxes, there are 11 bolts. I suspect that during a typical "On The Fly Bolens Engineering" decision was made when oil pored out of the cover, to redesign the bolt hole pattern in the cover and add 3 more bolts. Shown below are two covers both for a 500 gearbox. You can see two additional bolt holes around the hump. The other bolt was added across from the hump area.

Curious to say the least. Wouldn't you just love to have been a fly on the wall when someone had to explain that design flaw? :D
