What is the best oil to use in the chaincases? Remember I'm a HUS-SKI guy and know nothing about chaincase oil. I'm going to have to think a while to figure out how to get the oil in the 500 chaincase without dismantling the whole machine.

Coming from a "Red" guy, I use a heavy gear lube like 80W90. The lighter weight you use, the more likely the gearcase will leak. And even if you do the best job possible of rebuilding a gearcase, don't be surprised if it leaks anyway.

To get the oil in the 500 gearcase, tip the chassis up slightly sideways so you can pour down into the gearbox.

Would a "spray-on" gear lube work in this case? All the internal bearings are shielded and a product such as "Dynagear" sticks to a chain like glue.

There's no magic in having a sump full of oil. No cooling is necessary, just a lubricant to keep the chain wet. I tell people there is no reason to fill a gearcase full of oil. Just a little bit in the bottom just enough to keep the chain wet is enough.

Spray lube? Never thought of that, but I'm sticking with a little oil for now.

Actually the spray lube sounds like a good option.....especially if those chaincases leak no matter what you do. With the MG leaking oil in one half of the garage, I really don't look forward to Diablos leaking all over the other half.

I was thinking about CV joint grease as a lubricant for the chain case?

Here's my two cents worth - I think oil in the chain case is the better option. I would think a spray on lube would be good if you could reapply it periodically whereas being inside a chain case, once it gets thrown off the chain, and it will, it will not migrate back to the bottom of the chain case but oil will migrate back to the bottom of the chain case when the machine stops and when you are driving. It will always do this. This will give you each time you start driving, it will coat the chain with oil and relubricate everything. From what I know about grease, once it is thrown off it will coat the walls of your chain case, doing nothing for lubing your chain. I believe grease will get spun off of there. In my humble opinion, my vote goes for oil in the chain case for a diablo. i would definitely use spray on lube on a hus ski with the open chain you can reapply every now and then. My thoughts....

Great point oil it is I was thinking about it not leaking but did not think about -20 long lunch and a dry chain.

I applied gasket sealer to both sides of the cork casket before assembling the chaincases. Along with the double lipped oil seal and more gasket seal along the joint between the two halves of metal plates, I have no leaking chaincases with gear oil in them. -20....do those red machines even work in that temp???

In adding my two cents worth, I forgot to answer the original question. I absolutely agree with Bruce in using 80/90 gear oil. That will give everything a nice thick coating of oil and will make its way back down to the chain case for next start up.
