to shield or not, that is the question

As my 500 comes together, I realized it never had a heat shield. Should I make one or just drive on cold days? Why is vapor lock such a concern with Diablos when HUS-SKI had a similar motor/carb setup and vapor lock is not s big concern? Is it the increased engine size and resulting more heat that created the problem?
