How to address starters that get wet.

Hi all,

If you have a 503 with the starter under the motor, you probably have experienced moisture getting in to the starter and giving you problems. It is a common issue as you drive through the snow and this powder gets sucked through the cooling fins on the flywheel and the hot motor tends to melt a bit of it. Over time, this water ends up in the bottom of the flywheel housing and has no where to go but leak out the flywheel housing to motor seam or end up in your starter.

One thing you can do to fix this or at least reduce the chances of it happening is to drill a 1/4" hole in the nose cone of the starter and drill another hole in the bottom casing of the flywheel housing. This gives the water someplace to drain before it ends up in the starter.
