Congratulations Jano! Exactly correct. The part on the hood is for a 444 hood latch but this machine needs the cast aluminum latch. In an earlier photo you can see the wire hook coming through the front tin to attach this latch.

Say Barrie, looks like you have some extra fender braces at the rear mounting of your handle bar assembly.

If you are referring to those horizontal lift handles which are also at the front handlebar mounting point, they are a feature of the model 400 found on no other HUS-SKI.

There are a few more small repairs to do to this hood to remove the 444 evidence. The light ring has two spot weld screws on the inside to retain the chrome headlight ring. In this photo they are bent sideways and can be seen at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions on the headlight ring. The 400 headlight was not this style and is a "cup" style light held with a 5/16" bolt through a flat metal bracket like the 200-A. At the bottom of this photo there is evidence that the other headlight holder was cut off.

Barrie, I did not know that. My 400 does not have it, but I believe my lower chassis is from a 200/200A. I will be re-restoring my 400 some day soon, that would be a good addition to help support the fender. Ken M.

Since there is little or no documents to determine the features of each model, we rely on observation. The 400 is perhaps the rarest of all HUS-SKI models thus making it hard to identify. This is my third 400 and all have had the rear lift handles. It would be great to hear from other 400 owners.

The lift handles appear to be factory installed. If they were present on all 400s I really cannot say. If we could find a 400 with a low serial number it would be easier.

This is a photo of another 400 I know of and the rear lift handles are there also. I think the serial number was lower than mine. It did have a cone shaped muffler before this muffler was installed.

This headlight is also found on the 200 and 200-A.

This headlight support is made of two pieces of 1/8" x 1" flat bar steel, bolted together by the headlight casing. I checked my 200 (same production year as the 400 ) and it has the same support but my 200-As do not. They only have the support under the headlight. Maybe a few of you 200-A owners could look under the hood and report in on the type of headlight support.
