I was very lucky for the yellow to turn out so well because 1/4 way through the final coat, my spray guy quit spraying properly. It would only spray about 1-1/2" wide rather than the usual 4 ". With this paint, the second coat is sprayed wet on wet so I didn't want to stop and get a lap line should I not get the gun going again before the paint "flashes" over. Since I was spraying a second base, I used the same black for the stripe on the hood. I have shown a close upof the are which was so severely affected by the spider cracks. It is important when sanding, to keep the paper in motion. Circular motion is best and in the case of these spider cracks which were grooved out, sand across the filled groove rather than with the groove. This is most likely to give you a flat surface. Your finger tips will tell you more than your eyes.

Barrie,

I don't consider myself to have nearly the patience and attention to the cosmetic quality of a restoration that you inspire us to have. So I am curious how you and others feel about putting a clear coat over your large painted pieces.

I've been clear coating hoods and chassis for about a year now and getting better results with practice. I find it is a way to repair some flaws in the original coat of paint, but more importantly, I'm hoping it will enhance the durability of the surface and reduce scratch marks and such when we drive them.

The paint I use is a urethane paint and does not require a top clear coat as does the " base coat, clear coat " products. I do go a little over board with the number of coats I apply but that is my scratch insurance. Although I have never done it, a scratch could be removed with sanding and buffing of the damaged area. I think the clear coat may cause greater problems when trying to repair a scratch. It is important to note that if my spraying experience was only from the dozen machines I've restored, the results would not be as good as I get now but because of 30 years of spraying furniture I am able to do decent jobs on these machines. Good spraying is more technique than equipment or environment. This particular hood was sprayed in my wood shop with the floor covered in sawdust.

Thanks for all the information Barrie. I can see that I am going to have to do a lot more work than I was planning on my hood. I have the information on the yellow paint in my files somewhere, but what do you use for the black. It looks great! Jim

The black was also a two part industrial paint requiring a catyliser to harden it. Available at NAPA...gloss black. The more readibly available Tremclad products would give a very similar appearance but may not give the abrasion protection required for the base.
